How it all started

Ever since I got my first bike I’ve been dreaming about traveling long distances. I was living in a rather small city and as a kid I just cycled around it. Later on, when I moved to Iași (86 km from home), one of the first things I did was to cycle from home to there and from there to home… It just made sense to do it! In Iași I made some new friends and together we started a bunch of bike trips. Those were my first long distance trips, staying overnight in tents and so on. I just loved it! (you can find the stories about those trips here). I had many other trips planned… but times changed, and they just remained plans…

When I moved to Galați (240 km from home) it did not take long until I decided to travel home by bike… It was the first big trip I ever did by myself and not only that but it was the longest trip to that day: 240 km in 12 h… that was my personal record….

People called me crazy… they had no idea!

2014 found me in Denmark… the thought of cycling from there back home was inevitable… And so it happened… I had just discovered geocaching, so what better way to find more caches in many different countries than cycling through them? I was going to gather more geocaching country souvenirs…

At this point, my friend Silviu, told me I could come through France and visit him. So we planned to take a car from Denmark to France, then I would stay with them for a while, and afterwards cycle from France towards Romania. It was almost the same distance I had originally planned (straight from DK to RO), but this way I was going to see some places I never been before, places not even close to my original route. And France? I’ve always wanted to go to France!

And so we made a plan! But as the days went by and the departure date was getting close, Silviu’s car broke down and the plan had to be canceled. Oh… what now? I had already my hopes up about visiting France… Should I go back to the original plan? Hell no! I decided to go to France by bike, and from there continue towards Romania.

And so I did! I went on the biggest bike trip of my life: #GBTE2014. A trip I am sure nobody ever did, not like this, anyway!

As I already said, back then I was just a novice geocacher, I had been in the game just for a few months and had found only 148 caches in total. Also I had never been in a such long trip, I had never crossed borders by bike.. heck.. I had never been outside of Denmark or Romania. I was literally going into the unknown, so unprepared…

But even so, I got on the bike, and cache after cache, kilometers were passing by. Stopping a lot for geocaches makes the road a lot easier… time goes by faster… After 16 days I finally arrived in France and met with my friends.

There is a lot more to say about this, so I welcome you to read more about the trip on the dedicated page.

Truth is #GBTE2014 was just a small taste… an appetizer if you wish… After it was all done I had the  constant wish to do it again, as soon as possible… Bigger, better prepared, with a well planned route and geocache lists…

I am so enthusiastic about the next trip…

I look forward to be on the road again, and build some more lovely memories, see the amazing places I have only heard about, and find the wonderful caches I only saw online…

soon…
